Everton fans react as Napoli trio Lozano, Mertens & Callejon linked with move

Loads of Everton fans have been reacting to a Twitter post from fan account Gwladys Street quoting Corriere dello Sport, via Area Napoli, who have suggested that the Merseyside outfit hold an interest in Napoli trio Hirving Lozano, Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens.

Toffees manager Carlo Ancelotti will know the trio well having managed all of them during his spell in charge at the San Paolo stadium, and it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the Italian outfit’s players are being linked with moves to Goodison Park.

Corriere dello Sport, via Area Napoli, report that the Serie A club would be looking to recoup €40m (£34m) for Lozano, whom they bought from PSV Eindhoven during the summer, while Mertens and Callejon could be available for nothing given their contracts are due to expire this summer.

While there was some love for the link to Mertens and the Mexico international, who has struggled following his summer move from the Netherlands having scored three and assisted two in 27 appearances in all competitions, one did point out that it isn’t the first time the 24-year-old has been linked, with director of football Marcel Brands commenting on potentially signing him previously.

Another said they’d prefer to keep Theo Walcott than sign Callejon, although with the latter having one goal and nine assists compared to one goal and two assists for the former this term, that is perhaps a slightly controversial opinion.

Others were not impressed with the links, and feel this is just a lazy link to players Ancelotti knows well from his previous management spell.

This does happen a lot in the media, so it will be interesting to see if any of this reported interest does come to fruition.

There were those who weren’t impressed by the lack of the success and the ages of Mertens and Callejon either, given they will both be 33 years of age come the start of next season.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players….

They may not be ones for the future in that regard, but with 90 Belgium caps and 119 goals in 305 games for Napoli, Mertens is very much for the here and now.

In other Everton news, many Toffees fans have been discussing an attacker who has scored 19 goals in 22 league games this season…
